PETER SHAW

The club’s young athletes had their best ever Northern Cross-Country Relay results in Sheffield winning five sets of championships medals and finishing first overall with the fastest aggregate time over the eight races.

Pride of place must go to our U13 boys of LUKE CARRINGTON, OSCAR SCHOFIELD, FREDDIE MEREDITH, JAMES O’BRIEN and FINLAY GODDARD who won this title to add to their Northern Road Relay title they won last month. Our U13 girls were bronze medallists in the Northern Road Relay but at Sheffield, although our team of AVA CLOUGH, IZZY APPLEBY and SARA CLOUGH ran really well to finish fourth team out of 49 starters, they missed out on medals by just eight seconds. Our B team of EVA KARALIUS, LIZ SINCLAIR and MADDY HOLT are all young enough to compete in this age-group next year and finished an encouraging third in their category.

The club’s most outstanding performance was LARA CRAWFORD who ran the fastest leg of the day in the U17 relay and teamed up with GEORGIA HEATH and EMILYKATE HALL to finish in silver medal position. Our B team of ANNOUSKA BROOKS, ROSE SINCLAIR and ROSANGELA SUMBO also finished runners up in their category. Our U17 men’s team of CHARLIE HOBSON, AIDAN LYNCH and ROBBIE RIGBY had their best result this winter to finish 9th team out of 33 starters.

The club’s U15’s was the only squad to medal in both the girl’s and boy’s relays. Our girls are the Gtr. Manchester Road Relay Champions and at Sheffield our team of KATIE STRINGER, LUCY DIXON and IZZY BURKE finished in bronze medal position whilst the B team of JASMINE REED, LIBBY HILL and KIRSTEN MACKIE finished runners-up. Our boy’s team of ELLIOT SAVAGE, JACK SPARK and EVAN SAVAGE were also bronze medallists whilst the B team of WILL STANWAY, JAMES KNOCKTON and CHARLIE TITTENSOR finished 6th in the race and 2nd in their category.

This was the first opportunity for our Primary aged athletes to compete at this level and they really rose to the occasion. Our U11 boy’s team of LIAM O’BRIEN, ISAAC REED (on his club debut) and BEN KEELEY finished in silver medal position whilst our B team of DANIEL OAKES, MATTY CULLEN-BROWN and ALEX FRASER finished 2nd in their category. Our U11 girl’s  A team of IMOGEN HILL, IZZY HALL and OONAGH Mc MANUS ran well to finish 5th team whilst our B team of AVA BYGRAVE, SIENNA JONES and LALI BROWN finished runner-up  in their category. The performances of these four team show we have one of the strongest Primary squads in the North of England and I look forward to seeing them compete in the Manchester League at Kenworthy Woods on November 9th.

XC relays

Sale senior men had one team and were strong enough to finish 3rd place comprising DAIEL KASHI, JAMES WIGNALL, WILLIAM ONEK and ALEX BRADFORD. The ladies A team were 7th with SOPHIE WOOD, AINE CUNNINGHAM and LYDIA BRIGGS. Sophie achieving the 5th fastest time of the day.

MANCHESTER AREA CROSS-COUNTRY LEAGUE #1 WYTHENSHAWE PARK, MANCHESTER.

 PETER SHAW

Our teams performed well finishing 1st overall with the best aggregate score over the six races. The match started well with FREDDIE MEREDITH winning the U13 boy’s race whilst LUKE CARRINGTON finished 3rd on his club debut and with FINLAY GODDARD and FINLAY DAY our team finished 2nd to Wirral. The next match is on November 9th at Kenworthy Woods and will feature the start of the U11 championship in which we medalled last year in both the boys and girls age-groups. The Arrowe Park race in Birkenhead has now changed dates from the 7th to Sunday the 8th. Please pass the word around.

Thank you to all the people who helped at Wythenshawe Park, the weather had ruled out using the field for parking and the marshals did a fantastic job guiding the cars to suitable places to abandon their vehicles. The volunteers who laid out the course and marshalled the races must also be applauded, the course was challenging and back to the traditional mud bath that we all expect.

Silver Medal winners.

Leeds won the men’s race with Sale Harriers only a couple of minutes behind. Matt Barnes managed to hold off Carl Hardman in an exciting race for the silver medal. Nigel Martin posted the 4th fastest time of the day with Phil Robertson’s time not far off (9th fastest). Our B team were 22nd and C team 32nd still ahead of many A teams. Unfortunately this year we had no other men’s teams. Salford managed 8 teams, something to work on for next year.

I have to say the N.O.E.A.A. must be commended for the way they organise this and the medals are always well worth the effort if you reach the podium. Many local heroes have been around that long as well, Dave Norman was back after a frustrating injury ravaged couple of years, as was Matt Barnes fresh from his vet European 1500m victory; well done. Relative youngsters Carl Hardman and ever improving Nigel Martin were to the fore. All the latter are coached by the incomparable Norman Poole. Conspicuous by their absence were the quality runners of Stockport, apart from Jack Morris who needed more quality around him. Morpeth also didn't seem to have their strongest team out. Victorious Leeds have recruited well as half their team are Dossers; Alumni of Leeds University led by Phil Sessman who recorded fastest lap.

This is the third year the Road Relays have been hosted at Sport City and apart from the inadequacy of the main spectator entrance gate it has been a good venue. The main thing to commend it is the ample parking and transport links, as you could get there by tram if a Manchester resident. The stadium is a covered venue with a 5000 capacity; more than enough for this. If you wish you can watch the change overs, start and finish from the comfort of sheltered seats long as the wind doesn't blow. Out on the course it is easy to move around and see the person or team you are following on multiple occasions. The commentary by Dean Hardman was very clear and informative.

The backdrop of the City stadium in one direction and the old Gasometer gave a contrasting reminder of old and new Manchester.

The opening race is always the Under 13 teams excitedly giving their all in what for them is their first big event. Clever course design, with age groups and genders overlapping sometimes, allows a lot of racing in a short space of time. However, later in the day it can become hard to follow especially as Seniors do two laps and some clubs enter a lot of teams; Salford in particular like this event because they don't do track and they stand to do well in it as their runners support the event. The main contenders will have strong runners to call upon but it varies from year to year how well the athletes support it; some may have just returned from a rest in training so will not be race fit. The big three locally are likely to be Salford, Stockport and Sale with the over the hill challenge coming from Leeds, Morpeth and Lincoln Wellington who have previously excelled at this event.

In the Ladies event the women of Rotherham are big players, being regular podium contenders. This year was no different. The Sale ladies managed just 2 teams but had a great camaraderie despite their lack of numbers. Lydia Briggs and Harriet Hamilton were joined by mother and daughter Jackie and Beatrice Cordingley for 31st place. Club stalwart Lynda Rowlinson came in at the last minute to complete a full B team along with Sarah Goulden, Gill Edmundson and Beth-Louise Newton.

The U17 men managed to get out 1 complete team needing 1 more runner to complete a full B team. Zack Gailemin was the fastest Sale runner of the day. The U17 ladies got 2 full teams out for 15th and 18th place with the B team in front of the A team by over a minute. Ros Therim was our fastest runner.

The U15 boys did really well with the A team finishing in 4th place but failing to make a full B team. The U15 girls A team came 8th with Issy Burke getting the team to a great start. The B team were 22nd out of 46 teams.

70370241 10217634628549805 6566655093188329472 n

The only gold medals of the day were won by the U13 boys who beat Trawlden AC by just 2 seconds. The B team were 19th. We did have a C team but they were disqualified and so upholding the great British reputation for relay running. The U13 girls Ava and Sara Clough were joined by Eva Karalius to take the bronze medal behind Rotherham and Stockport. The B team were 13th, C team 20th and we nearly had a complete D team too. PETE SHAW

Our young athletes also competed in the Northern Counties Road Relays at Sportcity and the North-West Road Relays (incorporating various County Championships) at Ormskirk.

YDL champs

Dave Greenwood

After a week of poor weather affecting the test match at Old Trafford and home fixtures this year, plus the England International all experiencing torrential rain, it stayed dry! The North West Premiership had shown its strength in gaining the top three spots in the Northern Final in July. West Cheshire has some very good athletes who could compete well nationally but they missed out. Big clubs Gateshead and Leeds were not a match for the North West.
The last YDL Final at Bedford resulted in a very close match with Sale in fourth only twenty points behind the winners, Reading. A strong Southampton team of 2017 got relegated last year; such is the strength of this age group across the regions. Blackheath and Bromley, having produced stars like Dina Asher Smith are clearly the best London club for school aged athletes and were looking to contend once more.

The announcements regarding team standings over the day revealed how close it was, the lead changing and often the top two were separated by only a point. The declaration that a relay event which Sale won was to be declared void because athletes were placed in a wrong lane at a changeover could have altered the destiny. The totting up and checking of scores seemed to take an eternity. The positions of the seven teams were revealed in reverse order built the tension so when it was announced Blackheath were second the Sale athletes erupted into joyous celebration which rivalled any top class sport. Congratulations to all Sale athletes, their coaches and parents. That important triad of co-operation is essential to success. Nobody can imagine unless they've been involved, what team managers go through. Carl Worthington and Sinead Ferguson have worked really hard all year to bring about this result, Congratulations.
In our area we have some very good athletics clubs, all within a close area; Sale, Trafford, Salford, Stockport, have all produced quality athletes who have won National titles. Even the smaller clubs such as ECH (Georgia-T-B) and Leigh produce diamonds but not quite as many.
Replacing the sad loss of the City Games will be the National Championships, English Schools and other events all coming to Manchester in the next two years as Birmingham is re developed.
Whilst this event was going on 30,000 were watching Women’s Football (City v Utd) in the Etihad.
Manchester - capital of the North for Sport and culture! Be Proud.

And girl’s team manager Sinead Roche wrote;

I am so so tired but so so proud. This season I have been the boy’s team manager for the YDL (youth development league) for my club Sale Harriers. It's a series of track meetings and takes a lot of work and organisation... Well, we won all our matches in the North West league, so today; we were competing in the NATIONAL finals, against the winners of the other leagues in the UK, so a big deal really!! To be the best club in the country for this age... Today was just brilliant... the children were just unbelievable... and we only went and won so we are NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!!!!! When it was announced, there was a tear in my eye and it was pandemonium... the kids were so excited, screaming, shouting, throwing each other in the air.... there's something about sport which just brings this pure joy that you can't get from anything else... Kids nowadays sometimes get a raw deal, but today, seeing so many children, so talented and dedicated, working so hard and then their delight on achieving their goals... not sure anything beats that!!

Peter Shaw said:

Sale Harriers U13 and U15 boys and girls are the 2019 National YDL Champions, a title they’ve now won three times in the last five years. This is the Golden era for the club’s young athletes. The cauldron for a very tense final was on home turf of Sportcity. We went as eleven times Northern champions to compete against Britain’s top clubs. The final was as exciting a day of athletics that anyone could hope for with Sale scoring 601 points to win by just six.  We set four YDL records, three club records and won 70 medals including 28 gold.

Our inspirational captains led from the front with both setting new YDL records. Girl’s captain SUCCESS EDUAN won both sprints in new YDL record times and won the award for the best performance of the day. She also teamed up with NATACHI NWOSU, FAVOUR JOSEPH and JASMINE RICHARDSON to win the sprint relay. Jasmine is to be congratulated on setting a club record in the hammer whilst Favour not only won the 300m but collected a 3rd gold medal when she teamed up with HERMIONE MASON, IZZY BURKE and OLIVIA BROWN to win the 4 x 300m relay.

Boys captain BASIL ZOLA high jumped a massive PB of 1.93m to set a new club and YDL record. Basil was a real action hero as he also won the long jump and competed in four events. THEA BROWN also competed in four events and cleared 1.61m in the U13 girl’s high jump to also set a new YDL record broke club records for both the U13 and U15 age-groups. ...a super girl who can really fly!

EVAN SAVAGE was a clear winner in the 1500m and won the Frank Starkie Memorial Trophy (Frank was a Sale Harrier chairman who made a massive contribution to youth athletic development before his sudden death in 2006).

A special mention to primary age athletes EVA KARALIUS and LILY OLDALE who both won bronze medals . Our other medallists were

GOLD:  ELLIOT SAVAGE, WILL STANWAY, JAMES KNOCKTON, MABEL ADJEI, MATTHEW GARDNER, SETIRA REID, HOLLY GARNER and SARA CLOUGH.

SILVER: ELLISE FRYER-FRANCIS (3 medals), TIA GROVER (2 medals), RUARI Mc DONALD, MACKENA BRADSHAW, TOM BOYD, NATACHI NWOSU, BECCA MCLYNN, MABEL ADGEI, ANNABEL AMADIN, JASMINE RICHARDSON, HERMIONE MASON, PRINCE MENDEZ, FREDDIE MEREDITH, HOLLY GARDNER, SETIRA REID, THEA BROWN, AVA CLOUGH and LILY EDSON.

BRONZE: LILY OLDALE (2 medals0, DECLAN O’LOUGHLIN, ELLIOT SAVAGE, EVAN SAVAGE, WILL PARKER, SAMMY BREINGAN, HERMIONE MASON, GEORGIA WALL, SHONA WILKINSON, ANNABEL AMADIN, MABEL ADJEY. ELLA GILLESPIE, IZZY BURKE, OSCAR SCHOFIELD, PRINCE MENDEZ, TOLU ADEYEMI, TIM ZOLA, THEA MAY, EVA KARALIUS and NANCY PICKLES.

It is impossible to acknowledge everyone but every boy and girl can be proud of what they achieved and the honour they’ve brought the club. Many thanks to club officials who scored a maximum of 56 points which contributed to our team victory. It would, of course, all be impossible without team managers CARL WORTHINGTON and SINEAD FERGUSON.

Life in a day

By Andy Carlin

‘Life in a day’ is the phrase that got stuck in my head to make me first consider entering a 100 mile race.  We all know how it goes, once the thought is there it won’t go away and sooner or later needs to be acted upon.  The act became a 103 mile, 10000ft of ascent, point to point trail race between Farnham and Ashford along the North Downs Way.

‘Life in a day’.  The ups, the downs, the challenges, the problem solving, this is what I was looking for and this is what I found.  From having to duct tape the top of my water bottles on at the first checkpoint, to learning that pineapple is delivered from the gods (closely followed by minestrone soup) it was a journey of discovery and camaraderie.

The race started from the mouth of the North Downs Way at 6am, the start line marked with a couple of flags, an abandoned trolley and a double mattress.  The early morning light glinting through the trees as the starting crowd began to stretch out across the countryside aiming for some distant horizon.

You can spend a lot of time on your own throughout these events which makes support, wherever it is found along the course, even more enjoyable than at many other events.  To have an Austrian man shouting ‘IT’S A ROCK STAR!’ at you while on his own in the middle of a field 52 miles into a race is enough to keep anyone moving.

A defining part of the day is running through the transition between day and night.  The sun takes hours to set but darkness comes down in an instant.  With head torches on, the hills become bigger, the forests become thicker and skittering sounds boom in the undergrowth.  This was a part of the day that I had thought a lot about beforehand, not wanting my energy to drop with the failing light.  So the journey became only ever to the next checkpoint, pattern emerging of eating and moving, never counting the seconds.  Just forever following the shimmering scraps of tape through corn fields, forests and along the ridge lines of the trail.  So it was that 20 hours and 28 minutes after starting, I crossed the finish line in 19th place, picking up a ‘finisher in a day’ belt buckle and immediately falling asleep!

Finally, these adventures could not be done without the support of others.  Everyone cheering on the day, supporting during training, and assisting in the build-up; the camaraderie of these events encompasses a huge number of people beyond those that place themselves between the start and finish lines.  This journey was no different. Thanks to everyone who helped to make this possible and allowed us to raise over £900 for charity as well as getting me a new belt buckle.
