MORRIS JEFFERSON RIP
Sale Harriers is very sad to announce the death of Morris Jefferson who passed away in March 2025 in Wythenshawe Hospital following a short illness.
Morris is a Sale Harrier's legend! His career with the club goes back about 70 years when he joined the club as a teenager. As a junior runner he was one of British best middle distance runners with a junior mile time of just over four minutes. Competing with the likes of Hugh Barrow, Graham Brown, Dave Hogg, Peter Abel and others, they attracted thousands of supporters.
In the early 1960’s when the club's boys and youths teams were very successful, the club hosted a foreign club competition and Morris, with middle distance colleagues Peter Abell, Malcolm Rothwell and Robert Brett just missed breaking the British 4 x 880 record by half a second. Then again in 1964 with Dick Bratt, Peter Abell and Malcolm Rothwell, Morris broke the British 4 x 880 yards record
Following his successful running career, he committed the remainder of his life to Sale Harriers giving 100% to everything he did. Such was his exceptional level of commitment he was awarded the club highest honour of Life Membership.
- He was a highly rated club coach who developed many athletes to National level. Many current members were coached by Morris.
- He launched the first Harrier magazine in 1990 and was its editor and producer until 1995.
- He was an immensely capable race promoter, his most successful event the Sale '10' that attracted large fields and national level records.
- He was a superb club fund-raiser. He helped with organizing the annual Charity shop in Sale and he launched the Harrier magazine to promote fund-raising schemes
- He was ever present in every club activity from the very successful 100x 1 mile relay events in his early years to more recently helping out at the club promotion of the winter indoor series
- He was a member of the club's Executive committee
- For almost 20 years he had responsibility to safeguard the club's cherished archives
